Silja Mustaparta-Dolve

Oda & Mathem

Head of Customer Insight

Silja leads research at Oda/Mathem, a Nordic online grocery retailer based in Oslo, Norway. For the past 19 years, she has worked to understand users and customers. At Oda, her work spans the end-to-end grocery shopping experience—from how people decide what to have for dinner, to what works (and doesn’t) in the shopping journey, and why they keep forgetting the toothpaste again.

With a background in strategic and service design as well as product management, she believes asking the right questions is half the job—and making sure the answers lead to better decisions is the other half. When not deep in research, she’s usually in the kitchen experimenting with new dishes or upside down in an acrobatics class.

This session explores how real customer decisions are made during online grocery shopping, focusing on the often-overlooked moments that shape behavior. By combining video diary studies with follow-up interviews, the team captured real-time insights into shopping habits and uncovered the “why” behind spontaneous choices. The talk shares practical lessons on conducting effective diary research and avoiding common pitfalls. It’s especially relevant for UX, product, and eCommerce professionals looking to better understand in-the-moment user decision-making.
